Free and paid, side by side
Paid does not automatically mean better. These comparisons explain the specific difference, so you can decide whether the extra features are worth it for your household.
The free edition is a real product, not a trial. It puts Bitdefender's malware and phishing protection on a Windows computer and keeps updating with no end date and no card.
Total Security is the paid suite around that protection. It covers more devices, works across Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, and adds a VPN, parental controls and device management tools.
If one Windows computer is what you need to protect, the free edition covers the core risk. If you are managing phones and laptops for a whole family, the paid suite replaces several separate purchases.
The free version scans when you ask it to, then removes what it finds. It is well suited to cleaning up a computer that is running badly, or to checking a device as a second opinion alongside another antivirus.
Premium adds real time blocking, scheduled scans and protection from malicious websites as you browse, which is what stops an infection rather than cleaning it afterwards.
Free is a useful cleanup tool. It is not a substitute for continuous protection, so pair it with a free antivirus if you would rather not pay.
Family Link is free and comes from Google. It handles approvals, screen time and location on Android devices. It is the least invasive option, because it manages the device rather than reading anything on it.
Bark is paid and works differently. Instead of blocking content, it looks through accounts for signs of bullying, grooming or distress and alerts a parent only when something is flagged.
Qustodio sits between the two, with filtering and time limits across phones and computers, and a free plan that covers one device.
The honest summary is that these solve different problems. Choose Family Link for free control on Android, Bark if your concern is what a child is being exposed to in messages, and Qustodio if you need one dashboard across mixed devices.
Bitwarden's free plan is unusually generous. Unlimited passwords and passkeys, synced across all your devices, at no cost. For one person, there is little you cannot do with it.
1Password is paid and is built around households. Shared vaults make it simple for family members to pass a login to each other, and the app is often described as easier for people who are not confident with technology.
Start with Bitwarden free. Move to a paid plan, either product, when you actually need to share passwords with someone else.
Proton VPN's free tier has no data cap, which is rare. It gives you a handful of countries and slower speeds, and it is enough to protect a connection on hotel or cafe wifi.
Paid VPNs such as NordVPN and Surfshark add more locations, faster connections and extras like ad blocking or covering a whole household.
A paid VPN is not automatically more private. What you are buying is speed and capacity. For occasional use on public wifi, the free tier does the job.
CyMEC does not sell any of these products, and we do not earn a commission from any listing or link on this page. Nothing here is sponsored, and no company paid to be included.
These listings are informational and educational. They are here to help you understand what exists, what it costs and who it suits, so you can make your own decision with a clearer picture.
Inclusion is not a guarantee or an endorsement. CyMEC has not tested every product in this directory, and a listing here should not be read as a promise that a tool will protect you or your family.
Prices, free tiers and features change, sometimes without notice. Before you sign up, check the product's current pricing, features, limitations and privacy policy on the company's own website, and decide whether it fits your household.
